Ocean Guardians: Unpacking the Ocean’s Message on Packaging
• WHAT will be done
Description:
”Ocean Guardians: Unpacking the Ocean’s Message on Packaging”
This year our contribution will be split into 3 main actions:
1) Small display at the Plastic Cave
The EWWR 2020 resulted in the establishment of our Plastic Cave, which aims to raise awareness about plastic pollution. We intend to build a small yet symbolic display of a Packaging Dress to be displayed on a manequin in this area during the week, as well as some informative posters with it.
We will also have jars around the Aquarium with different types of packaging waste on display, as well as information available on our tablets for all visitors to access.
2) Special activities with school outings during that week
School outings held during the EWWR week will have, instead of the normal activity linked to their age and curriculum, a workshop in which the children will learn about packaging, recycling, different waste materials and their impact on the environment – with a specific emphasis on marine habitats and species.
There will be 2 activities available for 2 different age ranges. Students from kinder to year 6 will do an activity where they role play to go shopping at the supermarket and they have to take certain decisions about their consumption and disposal while comparing the pros and cons. Secondary School students (Form 1-5) will do the activity ‘‘Sollution to Pollution’’, which involves them creating an efficient social media campaign about environmental issues from scratch, thinking about every step of the way – target audience, platform, objectives, how to do it, etc.
Therefore, the students will be encouraged to understand the importance of a circular economy, as well as promoting events in their localities. They will also be explained the impacts of microplastics to humans and marine life. Besides, the children will visit our Plastic Cave to complement their activity, and in the case of Secondary School students, they will be encouraged to follow up the activity at home and actually promote the social media campaigns and tag the Aquarium so we can see their results.
3) Social media
We will promote educational content about this topic on our social media, including quizzes and posts.
