WEEE Awareness: Sparks of Change
• WHAT will be done
Description:
WasteServ Malta is implementing a nationwide awareness campaign focused on the proper disposal of Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment (WEEE), highlighting the serious risks posed when these items are incorrectly discarded—particularly the potential for fires at waste facilities and in homes.
The campaign engages school children through interactive visits at their own school, where a fire engine branded specifically by WasteServ is displayed to explain how fires can start from improperly disposed electronics. These visits are conducted in collaboration with the Civil Protection Department, who help explain the dangers of fire and provide information on fire safety. A tailor-made quiz, adapted to different age groups, is used to reinforce learning, with students receiving vouchers to our Reuse Centres for each correct answer.
After visiting six (6) schools throughout the year, the final school visit for this year, will take place during the European Week for Waste Reduction (EWWR), where an engineer from one of our facilities will demonstrate the internal components of a laptop. This session will encourage students to consider repairing electronics before discarding them and purchasing new ones. These visits will continue in 2026 for further outreach.
To extend the campaign to the public, WasteServ is displaying small electronic items that are commonly thrown incorrectly —such as mobile phones, tablets, cables, headphones, torches, and batteries at events. These displays are accompanied by educational messaging about the hazards these items pose when thrown into recycling or mixed waste bags.
During EWWR, a dedicated social media campaign will run, featuring reels that promote correct WEEE disposal and showcasing the volume of electronic waste received at Civic Amenity Sites in 2025. The campaign aims to raise awareness, change disposal habits, and reduce fire-related incidents caused by WEEE. Through school visits only, we have already reached over 2,000 students, and we foresee a wider reach through our dedicated social media campaign.
