Waste Reduction Week
• WHAT will be done
Description:
Action description – “Selectively makes the world more beautiful!”
Topic: Waste sorting and recycling
Period: Waste reduction week (typically between November 18–22)
Target group: Preschool children (3–7 years old)
Location: Group rooms, yard, kindergarten community spaces
Objectives:
Children should learn about the concept of waste, its types and the basics of selective collection.
Develop an environmentally conscious attitude in them: “whatever we can, let’s not throw away, but reuse!”
Experience that protecting the environment is a shared responsibility.
Planned activities:
1. Establish a selective collection point in the kindergarten
Together with the children, create a “waste island”: separate boxes/bins for paper, plastic, metal and mixed waste.
Children can decorate each box with drawings and pictograms.
2. Playful learning about waste
Discussion group: What is garbage? Where does it go? Why is it wrong to throw everything together?
Board game: Based on pictures (e.g. PET bottle, newspaper, yogurt cup, etc.), children have to decide which one belongs in the selective collection bin.
Activity game: “Collecting elves” – from the pictures placed in the group room, children take the waste to the corresponding colored “bin”.
3. Recycling crafts
Creative workshop: Make a flower from an egg carton, a pencil holder from a milk carton, a bird feeder from a PET bottle, a mosaic picture from bottle caps.
A small “Recycling Exhibition” can also be organized from the products in the hallway or for parents.
4. Attitude-shaping action with parents
Call: “Bring clean waste to the craft day!” 5. Closing program – “Waste-saving elves day”
Dramatic game or short show: the children perform what they have learned (e.g. adaptation of the fairy tale “Don’t throw it away!”).
Common song: “The world is more beautiful selectively!” (you can also make your own short poem or song).
Results, expected impact:
Children learn to recognize waste types.
They understand the importance of selective collection and recycling.
Environmentally conscious behavior also increases among families.
The environment of the group room, yard and kindergarten will be tidier and cleaner.
