WHAT will be done

Description:

Part 1 – Informing the school about proper waste separation and about E-Waste

As part of the environmental review carried out by Eko-Skola committee members during last scholastic year, we found that waste separation in classrooms was not as it should be.   They also showed that during staff events a lot of disposable waste was generated.

As a result we planned the following activities:

  1. A special assembly by EcoSkola committee members for all the school.
  2. Informative sessions delivered by Wasteserv Staff to all students from Year 1 to Year 6 about good waste management and about e-waste.
  3. Students from different year groups, in the Eko-Skola Committee, worked together to design posters which will be distributed to all classes prior to EWWR. These will be displayed near the waste separation bins to help students dispose of waste correctly.

Part 2 – Reducing disposable waste generated during school /staff activities

We already started working on this during last scholastic year when we reduced all disposable waste during the Holy Communion celebration.  This year we are going to extend this action to all COPE sessions and staff activities.  We plan to encourage all staff members to bring their own mug for COPE sessions and other staff activities.

We have 2 internal COPE sessions during this scholastic year.  The first session will be held during the EWWR, on the 26th of November.  Disposable cups will not be available on the day.  In this way, a minimum of 110 disposable cups will be avoided.  A poster was designed by EkoSkola committee and will be distributed on staff communication channels prior to the events.

During Parents’ Day we usually distribute tea/coffee to all staff members.  This was previously done in disposable cups.  This year, on the 14th of November, we will ask staff members to bring a reusable cup and to label it with their name.  The tea/coffee will be served in their own cup.  In this way we will be eliminating all disposable cups used for staff on the day.

Part 3 – Production of a series of episodes titled Trash Talk – eWaste Edition

Year 4 students will work on this part of the project.  Together with their teacher they will research the topic of e-Waste and write the script for the episodes.  They will then produce the videos.

These episodes will be broadcasted daily during the EWWR.  They will be shown to all classes and they will also be uploaded on the school FB page.  In this way we will be reaching out to the community.

They will also be promoted on the Local Council facebook page.

 Part 4 – Repurposing and renovating e-waste

Years 2 and 6 will participate in this part of the project.

The younger students will work on reusing old/unused electrical wires to create artistic installations (such as sculptures or portraits).

These art works will be used to decorate the school hall and the school’s MakerSpace (this is a special room, which is currently in the process of being set up, dedicated to the development of school projects).

Year 6 students will work on repurposing old keyboards.  They will use leftover pieces of wood to make key holders.  They will use the keys from old keyboards to create empowering messages on the key holders.  The keyholders will be decorated by the students to make each key holder more personal. In this way they will also use their individual creative expression.

The artistic works as well as the key holders will be showcased at school during events for parents.  The videos will also be shown in the reception area of the school.

The Rabat Mayor will be invited to school to see the artworks.  The event will be shared on the Local Council FB page, thus reaching more community members.
