The “Orange Week” in the 48er-Tandler: waste prevention and reuse as a counter-event to Black Friday sales

The ’48er-Tandler’ is a modern reuse shop and initiative of the City of Vienna. Its goal is to encourage all citizens to reuse items, as well as promoting the circular economy and preventing waste. With its modern design and diverse range of goods, the shops appeal to a broad section of the population.

However, providing a reuse shop is only one aspect of waste prevention and reuse. One of the biggest challenges is raising public awareness of these issues. To this end, campaigns, information and events are carried out on a regular basis. One of the most important events in this regard is the so-called ‘Orange Week’. It promotes sustainable consumption, the reuse and repair of goods, and is held as an alternative to Black Friday sales. This year, it will take place from 25 to 29 November. During this week, a variety of events focusing on repair and reuse will take place at Vienna’s reuse shops, the “48er-Tandler”. These include workshops on how to maintain IT equipment or textiles properly to extend their lifespan, repair and sewing cafés with qualified personnel, workshops on how to restore old furniture, a dress exchange and style advice with second-hand fashion, workshops for different school levels on these topics, theatre for pre-schoolers and simple ideas on how to reduce resource consumption in everyday life.

Through these activities, the City of Vienna aims to set an example for waste prevention, repair and reuse.

In order to attract sufficient attention among a wide range of target groups, Orange Week is being promoted online and influencers who are known for their commitment to sustainability are being involved both offline and online.
