Skips for Schools – Reġjun Punent
• WHAT will be done
Description:
Through the “Skips for Schools” initiative, the Western Regional Council equipped all state and church schools within the region with new waste collection infrastructure to improve separation and presentation of waste for collection. In total, 45 skips (1,100L) and 47 wheelie bins (120L) were distributed between September 2024 and January 2025.
The project was made possible through an investment of €18,000, partly financed by a €5,000 award from WasteServ Malta recognising the Western Regional Council as the Best Performing Region for 2023.
The aim was to give schools better tools to separate recyclable, organic, mixed, and glass waste, while keeping their premises cleaner and supporting the efficiency of regional collection operations. Local councils played an active role, each visiting their respective schools to promote proper use of the new bins and skips. The Regional President and Waste Manager also visited every participating school, reinforcing the message of shared responsibility and environmental care.
This project provided a long-term solution that not only improved waste management logistics but also help build environmental awareness to the students and school staff.
