Repair Café: Repair of Small Electrical Appliances
• WHAT will be done
Description:
In the context of the European Week for Waste Reduction and in alignment with this year’s thematic focus on Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment (WEEE), incommon will organize a dedicated action in Kyklos, the lab of incommon in Thessaloniki.
Kyklos is an open space for experimentation, learning and community activation around the principles of the Circular Economy. Through a wide range of participatory activities and hands-on applications, Kyklos seeks to explore how we can change our everyday habits in order to use the neighborhood’s resources more wisely, from food and organic waste to water, materials and everyday objects.
Housed within Kyklos is the Library of Things (LoT), a lending library where people can borrow tools and equipment instead of purchasing them. The LoT encourages responsible consumption, extending the life of products and making resources accessible to all. The Repair Café (RC) complements the LoT by giving these shared tools a social and educational dimension: it brings together people who want to learn how to fix their belongings with local experts willing to share their skills and know-how.
In November, Kyklos monthly Repair Café session will be dedicated to the repair of small electrical appliances, connecting directly with the WEEE theme for 2025. The session will take place in collaboration with Vasilis and Paschalis from SDR Lab, two experienced local makers who will guide participants through the process of repairing broken or non-functional devices.
The action aims to promote hands-on learning, collaboration and knowledge exchange through a participatory process. Participants are invited to bring small electrical or electronic appliances (e.g. radios, blenders, toasters, small speakers, etc.) and with the support of the facilitators, attempt to repair them on-site.
Participation requires filling out a registration form, where interested individuals can indicate the appliance(s) they plan to bring. This allows the facilitators to prepare accordingly and bring the necessary tools (not already available in LoT) or spare parts.
The Repair Café is not only for those who have something to fix, it is an open and collective event where everyone is welcome to observe, learn, assist or share their own experiences and knowledge.
Through the Repair Café, we cultivate a culture of repair and sustainability, reduce waste and strengthen the local community through cooperation, practical learning and the shared joy of giving objects a second life.
