Reboot, Reuse, Revive
• WHAT will be done
Description:
To minimize single-use packaging and plastic waste within the school community, several initiatives has been and will continue to be implemented.
Tuck Shop – Sustainable Lunch Packaging
The school tuck shop provides lunches to students either in biodegradable paper packaging or in students’ own reusable containers.
Goals:
- Reduce single-use plastic packaging waste.
- Encourage students to adopt reusable habits.
Outcome:
A measurable reduction in waste from single-use lunch packaging and increased awareness among students about sustainable food consumption.
Water Fountains – Eliminating Single-Use Bottles
Two water fountains have been installed across the school premises for both students and staff. This initiative will help eliminate the need for single-use plastic bottles.
Goal:
- Completely eliminate disposable plastic bottles.
Outcome:
A significant reduction in single-use plastic bottles and the development of a long-term culture of reusable bottle use within the school community.
Reusable Cups – Sustainable Beverage Practices
The school has invested in reusable cups suitable for both hot and cold beverages. These are used by staff and students and are also made available to visitors during school events.
Goals:
- Eliminate disposable cups from the school premises.
- Extend sustainable practices to visitors.
Outcome:
No disposable cups are used during school hours or events, reflecting strong community engagement in waste reduction efforts.
The Crafty Bunch Group – Creative Recycling and Upcycling
As part of the school’s accredited SMILE programme, during this scholastic year, the Crafty Bunch Group will focus on creating crafts and DIY items entirely from recycled or upcycled materials.
Goals:
• Promote creativity and craftsmanship through sustainability.
• Encourage students to see value in reusing materials.
Outcome:
Increased student awareness and participation in upcycling activities, leading to reduced material waste and enhanced environmental responsibility.
Concert Props – Eco-Friendly Production
Most of the props used during this year’s school concert will be produced using recycled materials, as done in previous years.
Goals:
• Integrate sustainability into artistic and cultural events.
• Demonstrate creative reuse of materials to the wider school community.
Outcome:
Reduced waste from event production and heightened awareness of eco-conscious practices in school performances.
Food Suppliers – Reducing Food Waste through Partnership
The school will collaborate with local Maltese food suppliers to collect items nearing their expiry date. These items will then be donated to the St Jeanne Antide Foundation, which supports people in need.
Goals:
• Reduce food waste within the local supply chain.
• Support community welfare through responsible redistribution.
Outcome:
Significant reduction in food waste and strengthened community partnerships promoting social and environmental sustainability.
Electronic Suppliers – Extending the Life of Devices
A school-wide campaign will soon be launched to collect electronic devices such as laptops, mobile phones, and tablets that no longer function properly. Instead of discarding them, the school contacts Maltese electronic suppliers to help refurbish these devices, giving them a second life and reducing electronic waste.
Goals:
• Reduce electronic waste by encouraging repair and reuse.
• Promote awareness of responsible e-waste management.
Outcome:
Devices will be refurbished and reused, minimising electronic waste and fostering a culture of sustainability within the school community.
Overall Impact
Through these initiatives, the school aims to:
• Substantially reduce single-use plastics, packaging, and material waste.
• Foster environmental responsibility and sustainability awareness among students and staff.
• Strengthen community partnerships that support circular economy principles.
• Serve as a model for other schools seeking to integrate sustainability into everyday practice.
