Open Days of Anaerobic Plant for Biowaste based in Blagoevgrad Municipality, Bulgaria

The Municipality of Blagoevgrad, owner of the Anaerobic Plant, has extended an invitation to all academic institutions on its territory (app. 20 schools and universities) to visit the facility during the period 24-26 November 2025 and have a tour of the 3 major sections of the plants.

The facility has been completed at the end of 2023 with EU funding and is designed to process nearly 16 000 tons of organic waste (both food and green components). An open public tender was organized in 2024 to select an operator of the plant and a contract with the selected entity was signed in mid 2025. The operator shall collect and process the food and green waste of 5 municipalities in Southwestern Bulgaria: Blagoevgrad, Simitli, Rila, Boboshevo and Kocherinovo. Approximately 220 collection points for food waste and 320 for green waste in the five municipalities have been established so far and the placement of the designed containers is forthcoming.

In parallel, a wide-scale information campaign focusing on separate collection of household waste, including biowaste has been designed and its implementation is just starting. A special focus of the campaign is placed on the local schools and universities. Therefore, a primary target group during the first Open Days of the Anaerobic Plant are school and university students.
