Malta Freeport Terminals Sustanable Initatives 2025
• WHAT will be done
Description:
| Community Computer Tower Donation -Initiative
Malta Freeport Terminals will be taking part in the European Week for Waste Reduction (EWWR) 2025 by launching a community computer donation initiative. We will be giving refurbished computer towers a second life by donating them to households, youth groups, and voluntary organisations in Birżebbuġa. Through this, we aim to reduce waste, extend the use of IT equipment, and support greater digital access and learning within the community. The computer towers will be inspected, reset, and refurbished to ensure they are safe and fully functional. Malta Freeport Terminals will work closely with the Birżebbuġa Local Council and community groups to identify those who would benefit most. Promotion Strategy |

As part of EWWR 2025, Malta Freeport Terminals will be organising a battery collection drive in support of Hospice Malta. Used batteries often end up in general waste, harming the environment, yet when recycled in bulk, they can generate funds for Hospice’s vital care services. Collection points will be placed in central Freeport buildings, encouraging employees, contractors, and partners to bring in used household batteries. All collected batteries will be passed on to Hospice Malta for responsible recycling and fundraising. Internal notices, posters, and joint engagement with our partners will ensure strong participation across the Freeport community. |

Malta Freeport Terminals will repurpose a disused container into a secure, weather-proof shelter for abandoned and colony cats in collaboration with a local animal welfare NGO. Instead of disposing of the container, it will be cleaned, repaired, and adapted, demonstrating practical circular economy principles. This initiative supports community animal welfare, reduces waste, and strengthens our Corporate Social Responsibility by giving industrial materials a second life. Employee involvement, will include donation of blankets in good condition and donation of food tins drive. The project reflects Malta Freeport Terminals’ commitment to sustainability that is both environmentally meaningful and socially compassionate. |
|
Malta Freeport Terminals will repurpose used wooden pallets into durable outdoor bench-and-table sets for a local Scout Group. Instead of being discarded, the pallets will be cleaned, reinforced, and finished for long-term use, creating shared spaces where Scouts can learn, meet, and work together outdoors. The project reduces waste by extending the life of existing materials, supports youth development, and highlights how simple, hands-on reuse can strengthen community wellbeing and environmental responsibility. |

Malta Freeport Terminals will support abandoned dogs through a practical and community-driven initiative combining reuse and fundraising. Employees will collect and repurpose wooden pallets to build raised beds, shaded rest platforms, etc. for a local dog sanctuary, improving comfort and quality of life for rescued dogs. Alongside this, a ‘Bottle for food’ plastic bottle collection drive will be launched across the Freeport, where collected bottles are exchanged for funds to purchase dog food and essential supplies. Employees will be encouraged to participate by contributing bottles, helping in simple pallet construction sessions, or assisting with delivery to the sanctuary. This initiative reflects circular economy values in action, strengthens community compassion, and provides direct, meaningful support to abandoned dogs in need. |
|
As part of our commitment to sustainability and community support, we will be organising a simple yet meaningful initiative that transforms everyday leftovers into help for those who need it most. Employees are encouraged to bring in stale bread and ripe bananas from home, which will be used to bake delicious bread pudding and banana cakes. These treats will then be sold internally, with all proceeds going directly towards purchasing food for abandoned dogs at the local sanctuary. This initiative not only reduces avoidable food waste, but also creates a warm sense of teamwork and shared purpose. |
|
Malta Freeport Terminals will organise a book donation initiative inviting employees to bring used children’s storybooks and educational reading materials. Rather than remaining unused at home, these books will be given a meaningful second life at Birżebbuġa Primary School to support classroom reading spaces and encourage a love of learning among young students. Collection points will be set up across Freeport facilities throughout EWWR week. By donating books, employees will not only help reduce waste through reuse, but also contribute directly to nurturing literacy within our local community. This will be an impactful initiative that brings sustainability and education together. |

| Hands Together for a Cleaner Birzebbugia
Malta Freeport Terminals will coordinate a community clean-up in Birżebbuġa, focusing on public spaces frequently enjoyed by residents and families. Employees, Freeport partners, and local volunteers will be invited to join a friendly, hands-on clean-up event aimed at reducing litter, restoring pride in our shared environment, and promoting collective responsibility. Reusable gloves, biodegradable bags, and safety equipment will be provided. This initiative not only supports our commitment to environmental responsibility but also strengthens our connection with the local community we are part of. |
