Laptop reuse at Ormeau Recycling Centre
• WHAT will be done
Description:
At Belfast City Council we see the damage that WEEE can cause if not disposed of properly. We know that people upgrade their electrical equipment much more regularly than a generation ago. Built-in obsolescence causing increased consumption and high disposal rates for laptops, tablets and other WEEE, Belfast City Council introduced an innovative scheme to give people an alternative disposal option for their WEEE. In partnership with local technology experts we can securely wipe data from donated equipment and repair broken items so that the pieces of tech are suitable to be redistributed to local community organisations. From there the items can be given to people who need them most. With this scheme we are not only reducing WEEE but we are helping the most vulnerable in society and supporting local organisations too, thus encouraging a circular economy in Belfast and Northern Ireland.
