Exploring Letters, Creativity, and Connection at the Library

Throughout July and August, our library transformed into a vibrant hub of discovery and imagination every Saturday. INDAMMU L-ALFABETT FLIMKIEN…B’DIFFERENZA was a four-day programme that brought children and their parents together to explore the world of alphabets, keyboards, and creative reuse.

🗓️ Weekly Highlights

  • Week 1: Alphabets Around the World
Children discovered that people across the globe use many different alphabets, each reflecting the richness of its language and culture. Special focus was given to the Maltese and English alphabets.

During this session, families were also introduced to the fascinating world of keyboards. They explored the variety of keyboard types and keys, learning how different designs serve different languages and functions. We discussed the environmental impact of electronic waste—highlighting how many keyboards end up in landfills—and opened a real keyboard to examine its internal components, offering a hands-on look at how these devices are built and how their parts can be reused creatively.

  • Week 2: The Keyboard Up Close
Participants explored various types of keyboards and how their components are made. A unique word search puzzle was created using the names of all the children who took part in the programme. What made it extra special was that the puzzle was crafted using real keys from old keyboards—turning discarded materials into a playful and meaningful activity that reinforced letter recognition and teamwork.
  • Week 3: Crafting with Keys
Old, unused keyboards were repurposed into learning tools and crafts. Children shared keys, built words, and uncovered the magic behind each letter—working together with their parents as a team.

During this session, children also created personalised keychains using discarded lanyards and keyboard keys. Each child selected the HOME key—symbolising belonging and creativity—and paired it with their initials to craft a unique keepsake. Additionally, families used discarded keyboard wires to braid belts. Parents supported one another, sharing techniques and encouragement, turning a simple upcycling activity into a beautiful display of teamwork and collaboration.

  • Week 4: Festive Creations
The final summer session celebrated creativity with Christmas baubles made from keyboard keys—transforming discarded items into meaningful decorations. Children, guided by their parents, used glue guns to assemble their baubles. For many, it was a first-time experience—some parents had never used a glue gun before! What truly stood out was the spirit of teamwork, patience, and shared learning. Every bauble became a symbol of creativity, sustainability, and togetherness.

🤝 A Community Experience

Throughout each session, we placed strong emphasis on environmental awareness. Children and parents were encouraged to think critically about what we throw away—especially electronic waste. We explored how preloved electronics can be repurposed creatively, turning discarded items into meaningful crafts and learning tools.

We also discussed the importance of handling electronic components responsibly, particularly when they may pose a hazard. As part of our commitment to sustainability, we highlighted the need to care for the people who work in waste management facilities. These individuals handle the materials we discard, and it is our duty to ensure they are protected. Raising awareness and properly disposing of hazardous items helps safeguard their health and safety.

Held in the heart of our library, this programme was more than just educational—it was a celebration of teamwork, creativity, and family bonding.

🎄 INKOMPLU — We Continue the Journey

We’re continuing the journey! Using the same poster and title from our summer programme, we’re adding INKOMPLU—meaning “we continue.”

INKOMPLU is more than just a title—it’s a commitment. It reminds us that caring for our world isn’t limited to a single session or season. It’s a daily responsibility. Through this programme, children and parents learned how to repurpose electronic waste, create with intention, and work together as a community. But INKOMPLU goes beyond crafts and creativity—it represents an ongoing journey of awareness, action, and care.

We continue to learn.
We continue to share.
We continue to protect our environment.
We continue—always.

đź“… Session Date: 22nd November

This special Christmas edition will celebrate creativity, sustainability, and shared memories. During this session, children and parents will revisit what they learned over the summer—from alphabet and keyboard components to crafting with recycled materials. It will be a hands-on experience where everyone will take part in creating a final keepsake craft using repurposed keyboard keys.

This activity not only reinforces the lessons of reuse and teamwork but also gives new life to discarded electronics—turning waste into wonder.
