Feeding Hope, Cutting Waste

Info

WHAT will be done

Description:

Feeding Hope, Cutting Waste is a community-led initiative by the HSBC Malta Foundation aimed at reducing food waste, promoting reuse, and fostering awareness about sustainable consumption.

During the European Week for Waste Reduction 2025, the Foundation will coordinate a nationwide food collection drive among HSBC Malta employees and partner schools. Collected non-perishable food will be redistributed to NGOs that support vulnerable families, reducing edible waste and addressing food insecurity. The HSBC Malta Foundation in collaboration with the Malta Food Agency within the Ministry for Agriculture, Fisheries and Animal Rights, is launching a food donation event aimed at reducing food waste while supporting members of our community.  As part of this event, HSBC staff members and their families together with schools are invited to encourage students, staff, and their families to donate food items that are:

Close to their expiry date but still safe for consumption, or purchased by mistake and unlikely to be consumed in time before expiry. Donations will be collected at the HSBC Head Office – in St George’s Square, Valletta (116 Archbishop Street, Valletta), during the week starting Monday, 24th November, till noon of Friday 28th November. On Friday, 28th November, registered voluntary organisations that provide food support to the community will collect the donated items for redistribution. This initiative not only assists those in need but also educates  HSBC staff members, students and families about the importance of reducing food waste and making mindful consumption choices.

Other initiatives being organised during this perioed:

  • Reuse for a Cause: Sales of upcycled and donated items by HSBC employees, with proceeds going to NGOs such as the MSPCA and the St Jeanne Antide Foundation.
  • Clothing Redistribution: Collection and distribution of used clothes to the service users of the Soup Kitchen and of YMCA (Hamrun Shelter).
  • Plant-Based Awareness: Introduction of plant-based meal options at HSBC’s staff canteen to promote reduced waste and sustainable dietary choices.
  • Educational Engagement: Awareness sessions and internal communication promoting waste prevention and circular economy principles, complementing HSBC Malta’s sustainability and financial literacy programmes.

Together, these actions embody the Foundation’s commitment to sustainability, community solidarity, and the circular economy, encouraging individuals and organisations alike to “reduce, reuse, and rethink waste.”
