WHAT will be done

Description:

From October 2025, Microsoft will end support for Windows 10, which could lead to tens of thousands of tons of electronic waste being generated worldwide. Due to the higher hardware requirements of Windows 11, many functioning computers would become “unusable” – purely for software reasons.

The Öko Tegely Association aims to reduce this waste stream and show that old machines can also be given a new life – safely, environmentally friendly, with community knowledge.

As part of Waste Reduction Week, we are organizing a widely advertised, free online webinar, where we will present with the help of an expert:

– why old computers should not be automatically replaced,

– how they can be further used with open source, community-developed operating systems (e.g. Linux distributions),

– where these can be accessed safely and what programs can replace the usual software.

In connection with the event, we are creating a practical, easy-to-understand digital guide, available online for free, that will help revive old machines and promote sustainable digital use.

In parallel, we are launching our “saving reusable machines” program: we will collect, reinstall and deliver to those in need still functional devices offered by the public, companies and institutions.

The 2025, smaller-scale action will be implemented as a pilot project in Szeged, Pécs and Budapest, and our goal is to expand our initiative to a national level in 2026, involving civil and corporate partners.

With this action, we will simultaneously reduce electronic waste, support digital access and promote the principles of the circular economy.
