Community Sewing Workshop
• WHAT will be done
Description:
The Għargħur Local Council is proud to present a community-based sewing initiative for the residents of Ħal Għargħur. The workshop will be led by co-founder Kelly Pisani of Dainty Vintage business operating in Għargħur, in collaboration with FSWS and sponsored by John A. Kingsley.
The workshop will guide parents and children through basic alterations and clothing repairs in their everyday life, with a particular focus on school uniforms.
The initiative would promote circular fashion, and align with the European Week for Waste Reduction that will be held from the 22nd to the 30th of November 2025.
Each attendee will receive a Basic Community Sewing Kit, which will include all the essentials needed in order to go through the workshop successfully, including: Needles (assorted sizes), thread (neutral and coloured), thread snippers, measuring tape, small scissors, pins and safety pins, pin cushion, elastic strip, spare buttons, seam ripper/unpicker, hemming tape, and an optional needle threader.
The 2 hour long workshop would be held in one session and divided into the following sections:
1. An introduction to the Community Sewing Kit
2. Fixing and replacing buttons on polo shirts
3. Patching and mending holes in garments
4. Shortening, lengthening, and adjusting hems
5. Repairing and replacing elastic bands
Each topic will also be featured in a dedicated video shared on Ħal Għargħur’s YouTube channel, reinforcing the locality’s reputation as a progressive community that is committed to sustainability and well-being.
