Carry the Story. Upcycle the Past.

The Luxembourg National Research Fund (FNR) is pleased to take part once again in the European Week for Waste Reduction (EWWR).

From 25 Years of Research with Impact to Unique Briefcases.

This year, the FNR continues its commitment to sustainability by giving new life to the large tarps produced for the 25 Examples of Research with Impact video series. These materials, originally created as backdrops to celebrate the FNR’s 25 years of funding research in Luxembourg, were designed with a second life in mind—already planned to be upcycled once their initial use was complete.

In total, five tarps measuring 2400 x 1950 each, representing 23.4 m² of material, will be repurposed into 55 high-quality briefcases. Each briefcase carries a piece of our shared story and the spirit of those who shape research in Luxembourg.

Handcrafted from the anniversary fabric by Bilum, a French atelier renowned for its craftsmanship and expertise in upcycling premium materials, the briefcases combine sustainability, design, and quality, turning a communication material into a functional, lasting object.

The briefcase symbolises movement and purpose. It carries ideas, notes, and memories wherever it goes. This one will also carry the story of 25 years of research in Luxembourg and the contribution of those who helped shape it.

This initiative not only extends the lifespan of existing materials but also highlights the link between science, creativity, and responsibility. The project demonstrates how circular design can align with exceptional quality.

Through this upcycling project, the FNR continues to promote mindful production, creative reuse, and the value of local and European partnerships in advancing sustainability.

The action will be promoted online through FNR’s communication channels, continuing the spirit of Explore. Inspire. Fascinate. Upcycle.
