An Electronic Device’s Story – They Have a Story with Us Too
• WHAT will be done
Description:
Between 17–21 November, 85 preschool children will bring small, unused, or broken electronic devices from their homes — such as headphones, remotes, toasters, or old electronic toys — each labelled with their name. Together with their parents, they will write a personal letter from the device’s perspective, describing its memories, emotions, and role in the family. Children will also draw illustrations to accompany their letters.
On 25 November, families will attend a Repair Workshop at the preschool. With the support of teachers and technicians from the Şişli Municipality maintenance department, parents and children will work together to repair these devices, promoting teamwork, creativity, and environmental awareness.
Items that cannot be repaired will be turned into a collective sculpture and exhibited, along with the children’s letters and drawings, at the Şişli Municipality Hall between 27–30 November.
To immortalize the stories, the children’s letters will be recorded in a studio by a Turkish voice artist and transformed into an audio story collection published on Spotify and YouTube, making their voices heard beyond the classroom.
After the exhibition, all electronic waste will be safely delivered to a licensed recycling center.
Expected Results:
-
85 children, 80 families, 10 teachers involved
-
80 electronic devices collected
-
30-40 repaired and reused
-
30 kg of e-waste recycled
-
1000 exhibition visitors
-
1 digital storybook & 1 public audio story album (Spotify & YouTube)
This project merges repair, storytelling, art, and sustainability, showing that even broken machines can tell beautiful stories — and find a second life through the voices of children.
