Description:
Proposal for the European Week for Waste Reduction (EWWR) Malta
Project Title: “A Book Never Dies – Give It Another Home”
Organised by: Ghajnsielem Local Council
Dates: 21st and 22nd November 2025
Time: 8:30 a.m. – 12:30 p.m.
Venue: In front of Ghajnsielem Public Library
1. Introduction
In line with the spirit of the European Week for Waste Reduction (EWWR), our Local Council is proposing a creative and environmentally conscious initiative entitled “A Book Never Dies – Give It Another Home.”
This activity aims to promote the principles of reuse, waste prevention, and community solidarity through a two-day used book sale. The initiative highlights how reusing books not only reduces waste but also allows knowledge, culture, and stories to be shared with others rather than discarded.
All proceeds from the sale will be donated to the Malta Community Chest Fund, thereby linking environmental sustainability with social responsibility.
2. Objective
The main objectives of this initiative are to:
Encourage reuse and waste reduction by giving pre-loved books a new home instead of sending them to waste.
Promote sustainable consumption by showing that resources, such as printed materials, can have extended life cycles.
Strengthen the community’s environmental awareness and commitment to the circular economy.
Support a charitable cause, ensuring that the project benefits both people and the planet.
3. Description of the Activity
A two-day book sale will be organised in front of our public library on 21st and 22nd November 2025 between 8:30 a.m. and 12:30 p.m.
Residents and visitors will be encouraged to donate used books prior to the event. Volunteers will assist in sorting and displaying books according to genre and age category (fiction, non-fiction, children’s books, educational materials, etc.).
During the event, books will be sold at symbolic prices, reinforcing the idea that every book deserves a second life. Informational posters and signage will also be displayed to promote the concepts of:
“Reduce, Reuse, Recycle”
“Sharing Knowledge, Preserving Resources”
“The Green Story Continues…”
4. Environmental Message
This project directly supports the EWWR theme of reducing waste and conserving resources by encouraging citizens to rethink waste as a resource.
Books that might otherwise be forgotten or discarded will instead become part of a cycle of reuse and learning, extending their value far beyond their original ownership. This activity symbolises the circular economy in action—where one person’s unused item becomes another’s treasure.
By reusing books, we save paper, reduce the need for new printing materials, and contribute to lower carbon emissions associated with paper production, transport, and disposal.
Moreover, by situating the event in front of the local library, we reinforce the idea that knowledge is infinite, shareable, and sustainable.
5. Community Impact
The initiative is designed not only as an environmental action but also as a social and educational event. It will:
Encourage reading and cultural appreciation.
Bring together residents of different generations through the shared value of books.
Demonstrate how small community actions can make a meaningful contribution to the global environmental agenda.
Support the Malta Community Chest Fund through all funds raised, promoting solidarity and social responsibility.
6. Expected Outcomes
Hundreds of books reused and diverted from waste.
Increased community awareness of waste prevention and reuse practices.
Strengthened local engagement in European environmental initiatives.
A donation to the Malta Community Chest Fund supporting those in need.
7. Conclusion
Through “A Book Never Dies – Give It Another Home,” our community aims to show that sustainability begins with simple, everyday choices.
By extending the life of books, we give value to resources, knowledge, and generosity. This activity is a celebration of both environmental responsibility and human compassion — a perfect reflection of the European Week for Waste Reduction’s vision: “Change your habits, reduce your waste.”
