Reduce, reuse, rethink, refuse

Our school is situated in a highly populated area by the sea.  So our students are aware of both the beauty of the natural environment and also how waste can destroy and harm this beauty and also affect biodiversity.  Throughout the past years, we have worked on raising awareness about marine litter and we have been working on taking action to reduce litter that is produced on land.  Throughout the past two years we have continued to emphasise waste separation and reduction of waste.  Between the 21st and 29th November, students are encouraged to take photos showing the beauty of Malta’s natural landscapes.  Older students will take photos of how waste spoils such areas.  These will be uploaded on the school’s FB page to reach a wider audience.  

Throughout the week, the students will be involved in activities that help them rethink how materials commonly considered as waste can be reused, repurposed or avoided.  The whole school is encouraged to avoid single-use items like disposable utensils and other products that generate excessive waste.  Some students will also have cooking sessions using local produce to reduce food miles. 

Through these activities, students will explore the principles of Reduce, Reuse, Rethink and Refuse by developing more responsible consumption habits and making environmentally conscious choices. They will be encouraged to reduce the amount of waste they produce, find creative ways to reuse and repurpose materials, rethink their everyday habits and refuse unnecessary single-use items and excessive packaging. By putting these principles into practice, students will understand how small, everyday actions can make a positive difference in protecting Malta’s natural environment and marine ecosystems.
