Material Sufficiency:Do we really need all this packaging, and how can we use fewer materials in the first place?

This action encourages students to question the amount of packaging used in everyday food products and explore how we can reduce material consumption through more sustainable choices.Working collaboratively with partner schools across Europe, students will investigate food packaging and labelling in their local communities, identify examples of unnecessary or excessive packaging, and explore how the 10R principles can help prevent waste. Through a shared Padlet, they will exchange photographs, research findings, ideas and good practices from their countries.  Students will examine practical alternatives, such as refusing unnecessary packaging, choosing products with less material, reusing containers, understanding recycling labels and exploring more sustainable packaging solutions. They will also compare packaging practices across countries and reflect on how consumer choices, businesses and communities can contribute to reducing material use. The action will culminate in a collaborative collection of student proposals and good practices under the message:“Do we really need all this packaging? Think before you buy, choose wisely and use less!”By taking part, students will develop critical thinking, environmental awareness and responsible consumption habits, understanding that the most sustainable waste is often the waste we prevent from being created in the first place.
