Three ways administrations can make material sufficiency happen

Public administrations can go beyond awareness-raising by changing how public resources are purchased, used and shared.

  • Make public events waste-wise

Organise a waste-prevention challenge for a municipal event, market or public gathering. Introduce reusable cups and tableware, refill stations, and measures to avoid unnecessary promotional materials and packaging.

  • Repair and reuse public furniture

Audit benches and other public furniture that could be repaired or refurbished instead of replaced. Invite local organisations or craftspeople to contribute. Or look at the furniture available in the public offices and buildings. Get inspired by the process implemented by the Norwegian Agency for public and financial management when in 2021 had to change office.

  • Challenge public procurement habits

Organise a workshop for municipal staff and suppliers to identify unnecessary purchases and explore durable, repairable, reusable or shared alternatives. Use real examples from office supplies, furniture, IT equipment or catering. And take advantage of the EWWR to launch official communication on the integration of green criteria in your public procurement processes.
