The Greatest Gift: Rethink Babyhood. A better world starts with us.

INFO [what will be done]

Description:

The Greatest Gift: Rethink Babyhood

The Greatest Gift: Rethink Babyhood is a campaign by Thrifty Baby, an initiative of Women for Women Foundation Malta , for European Week for Waste Reduction (EWWR) 2026. Thrifty Baby is a community initiative of the Women for Women Foundation that gives good-quality pre-loved baby clothes, equipment and essentials a second life, while making them accessible and affordable to families who need them. It aims to reduce waste and encourage families to rethink consumption during babies’ and young children’s early years, when clothes, toys and equipment are often outgrown while still being usable.

The action during EWWR 2026 will include the following activities:

1. Repair and Repurpose Session – University of Malta
In collaboration with the University of Malta, we will organise a practical session called “Mend it, don’t end it – Giving clothes a second chance” exploring how clothing and textiles can be repaired, reused or repurposed. This will promote practical skills and extend the life of everyday items.

2. School Visit and Creative Challenge
We will invite a local school class to visit Thrifty Baby and take part in an interactive activity encouraging children to consider how items can be reused, repaired or repurposed rather than discarded. This will introduce waste prevention and responsible consumption through practical learning.

3. Newborn Starter Kits for Families in Need
Working with social workers, we will identify disadvantaged expectant mothers who would benefit from preloved newborn starter kits. Our aim is to prepare and distribute these starter kits, giving useful items a second life, inviting new mothers to rethink buying new, while supporting families experiencing financial hardship.

4. Baby and Children’s Swap Activity
Families will be invited to exchange good-quality items their children have outgrown for items they need. This will encourage sharing, reduce unnecessary purchases and keep usable products in circulation.

5. Awareness and Marketing Campaign
A social media campaign featuring posts and reels (across all our platforms including a women’s Facebook group of over 62,000 members), will challenge consumers to rethink buying everything new and consider preloved baby clothes and equipment, and promote the environmental, practical and social benefits of reuse. An article on WHAM.com.mt, a radio interview and a press release will extend the campaign’s reach. These are just initial plans, other media outlets will be targeted with our core message. Communications will encourage the public to rethink, donate suitable items to Thrifty Baby, visit our Hub during the activities and take part in the campaign.

Expected impact: The action aims to challenge consumers to rethink their buying habits, refuse buying items they can swap, share or reuse, reduce textile and other household waste, extend the useful life of baby essentials, develop repair and reuse skills, support disadvantaged expectant mothers and encourage families to make more sustainable consumption choices.
