Reduce Plastic bags and plastic bottles

As part of the European Week for Waste Reduction (EWWR), the Santa Luċija Local Council will be implementing two practical initiatives aimed at encouraging waste reduction, reuse and responsible recycling within the community.

The Council will install dedicated containers for plastic bottles next to existing public waste bins in various areas around Santa Luċija. The aim is to provide a separate and easily accessible place where people can dispose of plastic bottles.

This initiative will also assist individuals who collect discarded plastic bottles, including bottles eligible for recycling schemes, by allowing them to access the bottles directly rather than having to search through general waste bins. Apart from making the collection process easier and more dignified, this measure will help keep public bins and their surrounding areas cleaner while promoting better separation of recyclable materials.

As a second initiative, the Santa Luċija Local Council will purchase fabric to produce reusable shopping bags bearing the Council’s logo. These reusable bags will be distributed to every household in Santa Luċija, encouraging residents to reduce their dependence on single-use bags and adopt more sustainable habits in their everyday lives.

Through these initiatives, the Council aims to raise awareness about waste prevention, reuse and recycling, while providing residents with simple and practical tools that can make a positive environmental difference.

The project also seeks to strengthen the sense of community responsibility towards waste management and demonstrate how small changes in everyday behaviour can collectively contribute towards a cleaner, greener and more sustainable Santa Luċija.
