Books Deserve a Second Chapter

As part of the European Week for Waste Reduction, we will organise a community book collection campaign focused on the concepts of material sufficiency, reuse and responsible consumption.

Throughout the campaign, we will collect books that are no longer needed by their owners at several collection points around the locality of Mtarfa. Rather than allowing these books to be discarded, we want to give them a new purpose and extend their useful life.

The collected books will be donated to charitable organisations, where they can be resold, redistributed and reused. In this way, the project goes beyond preventing waste: the books will gain new readers while also helping charitable organisations generate additional income to support several causes within the Maltese community.

Promoting Material Sufficiency

Alongside the book collection, we will run a social media awareness campaign promoting the principles of material sufficiency and responsible consumption.

The campaign will encourage people to think before purchasing and to consider whether they genuinely need a new item or whether an existing product can be reused or repaired.

This message is particularly relevant in an era of increasingly convenient online shopping, where it is easy to purchase items impulsively that may ultimately be unnecessary. Through a series of educational messages, we aim to encourage our community to make more conscious purchasing decisions and recognise the environmental and social value.

Putting material sufficiency into practice at Our HQ

We also want to put the campaign’s message into practice within our own headquarters.

Using reclaimed wooden pallets, we will create a small recreational and reading space consisting of benches and a table. The area will provide members with a place to sit together, discuss ideas and socialise.
