In 2026, EWWR shines the spotlight on Material Sufficiency, a powerful approach to reducing waste by rethinking how much we consume, what we truly need, and how we organise our systems of production and consumption. Sufficiency is about ensuring wellbeing for all while respecting planetary boundaries. It challenges us to move beyond managing waste and instead prevent it at its source.

Are you a public authority?

Public authorities play a crucial role in shaping infrastructure, regulations and public procurement systems. You can lead by example and support resource-wise approaches by:

Integrating sufficiency criteria into public procurement

Are you a private entrepreneur?

Businesses are key actors in reducing material use and reshaping consumption patterns. Sufficiency creates opportunities for innovation by focusing on durability, service-based models and customer trust. You can:

Act on electronics before they turn into Waste

The 17th edition of the European Week for Waste Reduction seeks to raise awareness about the EU’s fastest-growing waste stream, WEEE (or e-waste) – Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment. The selection of this thematic focus for the 2025 edition of the EWWR wants to raise awareness on reduce, repair and reuse activities for electric and electronic equipment that can be implemented by all the different categories of stakeholders.

WEEE includes six product categories:

Temperature Exchange Equipment: e.g., refrigerators, freezers, air conditioners.

Screens and Monitors: e.g., TVs, computer monitors, laptops (>100 cm² screen).

Lamps: e.g., fluorescent tubes, LED lamps.

Large Equipment (≥50 cm): e.g., washing machines, ovens, vending machines.

Small Equipment (<50 cm): e.g., vacuum cleaners, microwaves, tools, toys.

Small IT and Telecom Equipment (<50 cm): e.g., mobile phones, routers, tablets.

Electrical and electronic devices are essential to daily life, but the waste they generate is a growing challenge for the EU. In 2022, the EU placed 14.4 million tonnes of EEE on the market but collected only 5 million tonnes of WEEE (11.2 kg per person). E-waste is the EU’s fastest-growing waste stream, rising about 2% per year. Almost half of all WEEE is still not collected, most Member States miss collection targets, and only about 40% is recycled.

WEEE contains hazardous substances but also valuable and critical raw materials. Proper collection, treatment, and recycling are crucial to reduce environmental and health risks, improve resource efficiency, and support a circular economy.

The European Week for Waste Reduction is pleased to welcome Electrão as a new member of its Steering Committee. With nearly two decades of experience and a leading role in Portugal’s waste management sector, Electrão brings valuable expertise, innovation, and commitment to advancing Europe’s transition toward a circular economy.

A multifaceted waste management leader

Founded in 2005, Electrão began its mission by managing used electrical and electronic equipment in Portugal, representing 60 pioneering member companies. Since then, the organisation has steadily broadened its scope and impact. In 2009, it expanded its activities to include used batteries, and in 2018, it took another decisive step by assuming responsibility for used packaging—making Electrão the first management entity in Portugal to operate simultaneously in three major recycling systems.

More recently, since 2024, Electrão has been involved in the management of single-use plastics at end of life, specifically tobacco-related products, through its participation in the ÚNICO association.

Partner to more than two thousand companies

Electrão serves as a trusted partner for over 2,000 national and international companies, which each year delegate the responsibility for managing the end-of-life of the products they place on the Portuguese market. Many of these companies are supported across multiple integrated recycling streams, highlighting Electrão’s capacity to deliver comprehensive and efficient waste management solutions.

Its services encompass the collection and treatment of waste, the development of reuse strategies, and the implementation of environmental awareness and research initiatives—all designed to foster more sustainable business practices and support the shift toward a circular economy.

A nationwide collection network

Electrão operates one of Portugal’s most extensive waste collection infrastructures, comprising more than 15,300 collection points located in shopping centres, retail stores, fire stations, schools, and other public and private facilities.

This network is backed by a streamlined upstream system of logistics operators, reception centres and treatment facilities. All partners are selected according to strict criteria of quality, environmental performance, and operational reliability, ensuring proper waste collection, segregation, and processing—particularly for complex waste streams such as electrical and electronic equipment.

In 2024 alone, Electrão directed more than 36,000 tonnes of electrical and electronic equipment waste for recycling in Portugal.

Driving innovation and circularity

Electrão stands out as an influential actor in Portugal’s waste sector. Its integrated approach—managing multiple waste streams and leveraging synergies between them—adds economic value and enables more efficient, coherent recycling systems.

By continuously promoting innovative processes and mobilising organisations, partners, and citizens, Electrão contributes significantly to advancing sustainability and accelerating the shift toward circular economic models.

A valuable addition to the EWWR community

With its extensive experience, broad operational scope, and long-standing commitment to environmental responsibility, Electrão strengthens the EWWR Steering Committee and enhances its collective capacity to foster waste reduction and resource efficiency across Europe.

We warmly welcome Electrão and look forward to the positive impact their participation will bring to the EWWR network.

eWAsTER, part of the Interreg Euro-MED programme*, tackles the growing challenge of electronic waste (e-waste) across Mediterranean regions. The project promotes shared policies and coordinates business initiatives to transform e-waste from an environmental burden into a resource for sustainable development.

By developing eight Local Action Plans aligned with the EU Circular Electronics Initiative, eWAsTER helps regions transition from a linear to a circular economy. Partners from eight countries collaborate to protect the Mediterranean, recover valuable materials, and foster green jobs and innovation.

Focus area: recycling and reuse for a circular economy

eWAsTER focuses mainly on recycling and reuse, with a strong emphasis on building a coordinated circular system for e-waste management.

The project promotes the transformation of discarded electronics into secondary raw materials, reducing dependence on virgin resources and preventing pollution. It also supports reuse by encouraging the recovery of valuable components and materials within the Mediterranean economy.

While not the central focus, eWAsTER also aligns with the EU’s Circular Electronics Initiative, which promotes longer product lifespans, repairability, and eco-design.

In essence, eWAsTER aims to bridge the gap between policy and practice, creating integrated recycling and reuse systems supported by coherent governance and circular business models.

About the E6 project

The E6 project—Ecosystems for Extended-lifetime of End-of-Use Electrical and Electronic Equipment—addresses the fast-growing challenge of Waste from Electrical and Electronic Equipment (WEEE) in North-West Europe (NWE), driven largely by shorter product lifecycles.

E6 pilots repair, reuse, and refurbishment (RRR) ecosystems with the goal of strengthening regional capacity to manage end-of-use electrical and electronic equipment more sustainably. The project focuses on creating both physical and digital infrastructures that make it easier for citizens to repair and reuse their devices instead of discarding them.

Each participating region brings unique challenges and opportunities, making transnational cooperation essential. By sharing experiences, tools, and good practices, E6 is building local circular models for electronic equipment that can be scaled across Europe.

The ultimate aim is to develop tools, capacity-building schemes and replicable (awareness raising) strategies that embed repair, reuse, and refurbishment into everyday life; driving a systemic shift towards circularity of electronic and electrical equipment in European regions.

Focus area: repair, reuse and refurbishment

E6 places its main emphasis on repair, reuse, and refurbishment (RRR) of electrical and electronic equipment.
By making RRR services more accessible (through repair cafés, reuse stations, and digital support hubs) E6 encourages both citizens and organisations to view old electronics not as waste, but as resources that can be recovered, repaired, and reused.

In the spirit of cooperation that defines the European Week for Waste Reduction, today we highlight an inspiring initiative from our Swedish coordinator, Avfall Sverige, showing how collaboration can drive real change in waste management.

In Sweden, owners of multifamily residential buildings are taking an active role in improving conditions for source separation—the key to effective recycling. Physical conditions are crucial to success: clean bins, sufficient space, good lighting, and clear signage all determine how well residents sort their waste.

To promote learning and exchange of good practices, three national property organizations and three waste management associations will meet during EWWR. The gathering, initiated by Avfall Sverige, aims to identify challenges, share experiences, and discuss practical solutions for more efficient waste separation in residential areas.

Experience in Sweden shows that close cooperation between property owners and waste management organizations is essential to motivate tenants to separate recyclable materials from residual waste. A good example comes from the housing company Tunabyggen in Borlänge, which reduced its residual waste by 22% in just two years through close collaboration with the local waste authority and targeted communication with tenants.

At the upcoming meeting, Avfall Sverige will also present a new national goal:
➡️ 30% less residual waste by 2030, compared with 2023 levels.

All participating organizations are invited to adopt this target as their own. Achieving it means increasing the collection of packaging and paper for material recycling and ensuring that food waste is sent to anaerobic digestion, turning it into biogas and biofertilizer.

We hope that this meeting, and our shared goal, will lead to new and inspiring examples that can be shared across the country,” says Karin Jönsson, Communications Officer at Avfall Sverige.

The timing of this initiative, launched during EWWR, is intentional.

EWWR is the perfect opportunity to raise awareness about how we can work together to improve recycling. Knowing that so many positive initiatives are happening simultaneously, all aiming in the same direction, makes it easier to believe that change is possible,” Jönsson adds.

Before and After: Malmö Example
A waste room in Malmö was completely transformed through cooperation between a property owner and the local waste management organization, showing how physical improvements can make sorting easier and more appealing.

Creative Solutions in Höganäs
In Höganäs, a property owner was advised to move residual waste containers to the back of the garbage room, almost hidden behind curtains labelled “Lazy waste – Have you really source separated?”

Small drop-in holes prevent residents from dumping large unsorted bags, while decorative wall graphics make the room more pleasant. The number of bins and collection frequency were also optimized to match actual waste quantities—resulting in better sorting and cleaner waste rooms.
