EWWR will take part on October 29 in the Interreg Webinar Series on Waste Reduction<\/strong>: www.interregeurope.eu<\/a>, in Webinar III<\/strong>, dedicated to food.<\/p>\n

ACR+ will present the campaign, focusing in particular on the 2024 edition, which was focused to food waste. We\u2019ll also share good practice examples on reducing this type of waste, taken from last year\u2019s finalist actions.<\/p>\n

On average, each European citizen produces\u00a0nearly half a tonne of municipal waste each year<\/strong>. The EU aims to significantly\u00a0decrease this by 2030<\/strong>\u00a0but latest trends show that per capita waste generation has remained near stable for the past decade. To rectify this, the EU supports a defined\u00a0waste hierarchy featuring waste prevention as the number one priority<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Increased action to reduce waste \u2013\u00a0prevention measures<\/strong>\u00a0as well as strategies to manage and minimise existing waste \u2013 is urgently needed not only to achieve targets, but also\u00a0to protect our environment<\/strong>,\u00a0conserve resources<\/strong>, and\u00a0promote sustainable development<\/strong>. Economically, waste reduction can also\u00a0lower costs for businesses and public authorities<\/strong>\u00a0while promoting innovation in recycling and sustainable product design.<\/p>\n

Regional authorities are key actors for waste management and can actively support waste reduction by\u00a0establishing prevention policies and targets<\/strong>, adopting\u00a0green public procurement<\/strong>\u00a0and\u00a0encouraging citizen participation<\/strong>\u00a0via awareness raising campaigns. This webinar series will provide inspiration for implementing waste reduction in three sectors deemed a priority by the\u00a0EU Circular Economy Action Plan<\/strong><\/a>.<\/p>\n

Globally, around one third of all food produced for human consumption is lost or wasted. At the same time, over\u00a042 million people in the EU\u00a0<\/strong>cannot afford a quality meal every second day. To tackle this issue,\u00a0binding food waste reduction<\/strong>\u00a0targets\u00a0<\/strong>have been set by the EU:\u00a010% in food processing and manufacturing<\/strong>\u00a0and\u00a030% in retail,<\/strong>\u00a0restaurants, food services and households by 2030. The third and final webinar in the series will present exemplary actions to support food waste reduction and foster redistribution of \u2018waste\u2019 food.<\/span><\/p>\n
