The\u00a0European Week for Waste Reduction<\/a>\u00a0(EWWR)\u00a0<\/span>is set to kick off its 16th edition from\u00a0<\/span>16 to 24 November 2024<\/strong>. During this week,\u00a0<\/span>12,724 actions<\/strong>\u00a0focusing on waste reduction, product reuse and repair, materials recycling, and clean-ups will take place across\u00a0<\/span>29 countries<\/strong>\u00a0in Europe and beyond.<\/span><\/p>\n

Tackling food waste to transform Europe\u2019s food systems<\/h5>\n

The\u00a016th edition of the European Week for Waste Reduction<\/strong>\u00a0seeks to raise awareness about the strong\u00a0environmental impact of\u00a0food waste<\/strong>, joining forces to\u00a0change the way we produce, consume and distribute food in Europe<\/strong>.\u00a0Through actions and inspiring initiatives, the EWWR community encourages participants to rethink their relationship with food and raises awareness of its environmental, economic, and social impact. EWWR chose food waste as its thematic focus for the second time, after 2014.<\/p>\n

Food waste\u00a0includes all food (and inedible parts) removed from the human food supply chain in sectors like manufacturing, retail, food service, and households.\u00a0The EU generates over 59.2 million tonnes of food waste annually\u2014132 kg per person<\/strong>\u2014while over 37 million people can\u2019t afford a quality meal every other day. Globally, about one-third of food produced is wasted. UNEP data shows that in 2019, 931 million tonnes of food waste (17% of global production) was generated, mostly by households, food service, and retail.\u00a0This waste has significant economic and environmental impacts<\/strong>. In Europe alone, food waste has an estimated market value of 132 billion euros and contributes to greenhouse gas emissions due to cropland use, water, and fertilizers needed for food production.<\/p>\n

New coordinators in 2024<\/h5>\n

The European Week for Waste Reduction campaign exists for and because of its coordinators and action developers. Over the years, our big family has grown significantly, and we are always thrilled to welcome new members who are dedicated to spreading the message of a less-waste world across Europe and beyond.<\/p>\n

We are delighted to announce that new regional coordinators from Finland and Navarra (Spain) have joined the campaign<\/strong>!\u00a0 Welcome to KIVO Finland<\/a>– Finnish Solid Waste Association and the Office for Waste Prevention and the Promotion of the Circular Economy<\/a> of the Government of Navarra.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
