Description of the EWWR action:

‘Think Before you Bin! - A Year 3 Waste Detective Experiment’ is a classroom-based, cross-curricular action designed to encourage young learners aged 7 - 8 years-old, to rethink their everyday consumption and waste habits. Through the integration of Science, Numeracy and Literacy, pupils will investigate the waste generated within their classroom and explore simple ways of preventing waste before it reaches the bin.

The action will begin with a baseline waste investigation, during which classroom waste will be observed, categorised and recorded. Pupils will use tallying, counting, comparison and simple block graphs to analyse the data and identify which types of waste could potentially have been avoided. Throughout EWWR week, the class will then follow the principle ‘Think before you bin’, encouraging pupils to pause before discarding an item and consider whether it can be refused, reduced, reused or repurposed instead.

Literacy will be incorporated through a persuasive writing activity entitled ‘Don’t Throw Me Away!’, in which pupils will write from the perspective of an everyday object and suggest ways in which its useful life could be extended rather than immediately becoming waste. Science learning will focus on materials, waste prevention, responsible use of resources and conducting a simple investigation, while Numeracy will be used to collect, represent and compare the waste data.

At the end of the project, a second waste investigation will be carried out and compared with the original baseline. This will allow pupils to determine whether changing small everyday behaviours resulted in a measurable reduction in classroom waste.

The project aims to demonstrate that waste reduction begins before something reaches the bin. By combining investigation, data, communication and practical behavioural change, ‘Think Before You Bin!’ Encourages children to become more conscious consumers and recognise that even small choices can contribute towards the responsible use of resources and a more sustainable future.
