Glass and the city. How to improve glass collection in big cities? │ 90 Minutes to Close the Loop, episode 4
• WHAT will be done
25 NOVEMBER │ 2pm – 3.30pm (CET)
When it comes to municipal waste management, cities face very significant challenges in order to effectively organise separate collection. Public space is in high demand and faces very tough competition for alternative uses. Private space is equally limited, with populations living in vertical housing and in households that have little room for the storage of empties.
So, in this context, how to best organise a separate glass collection system?
In this episode, we’ll get insights into the Roadmap on Circular Urban Resource Management, created as part of the Urban Agenda for the EU. It offers cities and urban areas a structured, step-by-step approach to develop a plan of action that improves resource efficiency and drives the transition to a circular economy.
Two European capitals (Ljubljana and Madrid) and one of the Extended Producer Responsibility Schemes of Germany will share their experience with glass collection & recycling, the measures they have put in place to make the collection of glass more convenient for the consumer, and how they have worked with the rest of the value chain to achieve higher recycling targets.
In the best practice presentation, beverage company Pernod Ricard will tell us about their initiative to raise awareness on the importance of glass collection & recycling in the HORECA sector, working actively with bartenders and bar staff in the Madrid region.
Finally, in the News Update section, Vanessa Chesnot from FEVE (Federation of European manufacturers of glass containers) will reveal the latest recycling rates for glass!
