As it has done every day from Monday to Saturday since September 27th 2010 (14 years!!!), the non-profit organization “Asociatia SOMARO – Magazinul Social” (a Romanian-Austrian-Italian initiative) is currently offering food and everyday items to over 800 needy families in Bucharest for sale at an average price of 90% cheaper than at the first market.

SOMARO does not make any purchases, which means that everything that is offered would otherwise have been thrown away by our suppliers. And we are talking about an average of 400 tons of food per year and a very large amount of everyday items!!!

Of course, in Western Europe such an initiative is anything but special… BUT: for years SOMARO was the only organization east of the Austrian – Hungarian border that operated social markets and is still the only one doing so in Romania. This is despite the fact that we make our know-how available to anyone who asks us for it, but the legal and economic situation here has ALWAYS prevented such initiatives to date (with the exception of SOMARO).

SOMARO’s work is highly valued, our managing director Simon Suitner was awarded the Golden Medal of Merit of the Republic of Austria in 2020 for his work for SOMARO.
