2nd primary school of Nea Erythraia,Athens: Mastering the Art of Waste Reduction
• WHAT will be done
Description:
As an active participant in the Eco Schools network, the 2nd Primary School of Nea Erythraia is committed to promoting environmental sustainability and eco-friendly practices. In line with this commitment, the students will engage in a series of initiatives aimed at reducing waste within the school environment during the European Week of Waste Reduction. Although the school is equipped with specialized recycling bins for various materials—such as plastics, lamps, electrical waste, cooking oil, toners, batteries, paper, and a compost bin for organic waste—the correct use of these bins is not consistently practiced. To address this challenge, students will receive training on proper recycling methods for each waste category and will create awareness-raising posters to promote correct recycling practices. Additionally, students will participate in the Municipality of Kifisia’s competition on recycling large batteries.
More specifically:
- 3rd Grade:
The 3rd-grade students will actively participate in waste reduction activities, focusing on both recycling and food waste management. These activities will be carried out in collaboration with schools from Greece and Cyprus through the eTwinning project titled “Ecological Citizenship and Technological Creativity: A Journey into Literature and Space.” - 4th Grade:
The 4th-grade students will take the lead in creating recycling awareness posters and conducting webinars. These webinars will be designed to educate and train younger students from the 1st and 2nd grades on proper recycling techniques. - 5th Grade:
The 5th-grade students will focus on addressing food waste through the creation of informative posters focusing in the GoAL 12 Goal “Responsible Consumption and Production” . In addition, they will organize and promote a school-wide campaign to encourage composting as an effective method of managing organic waste. Those actions will be part of the eTwinning project “SUSTAINABLE: Sparking Understanding of SDGs Through AI and Novel Approaches in Balanced Learning Environments” envolving schools from Greece, Croatia, Turkey, Italy, Poland, Spain, Portugal and Lithuania. - 6th Grade:
The 6th-grade students will lead cleaning initiatives both within the school grounds and in surrounding areas, promoting environmental stewardship and responsible waste management.
By taking collective action and making full use of the school’s recycling and composting systems, the 2nd Primary School of Nea Erythraia reinforces its role as an advocate for eco-conscious behavior and sustainable development.
