As we are associate partner for Break free from plastic movement, at the end of November im doing brand audit campaign, to get attention to biggest polluters in our country – the botling companies. This is very important time, because our government is on the way to introduce container-deposit legislation. It’s a great step to reduce plastic pollution in nature, but only if the bottle deposit system is introduced in the right way. Currently, we are facing strong lobby from beer bottlers and soft drink companies for introducing inefficient system that could accept only undamaged plastic bottles and cans, their aim is to introduce system that is only economically viable for them, not nature friendly. Their aim is just to produce more bottles, not to recycle. These big companies also avoid to face the fact that we found a lot of plastic waste in our nature. Im campaigning for bottle deposit system that can accept also damaged plastic bottles and aluminium cans, as well other waste units that should be included in depository system by recommendations of European Union. As we live in the age of technology, its fully possible to introduce modern bottle deposit system that can accept more reusable waste and not to create new waste. Currently, As we have a lockdown situation in Latvia until 6th December, unfortunately I cant organize public event, but still I can make a great clean up campaign myself! My action plan is to do the record breaking clean up campaign in our capital city Riga, alone running non stop through different parts of Riga – riverside, parks, forest, railway road etc. with aim to collect 10 000 pieces of trash in 50 hours. All collected trash will be sorted, monitored and we will bring this data to public, so everyone can see a clear and independent picture, which companies packaging we find in nature.
The main aims are following:
- To bring attention to main polluters;
- To campaign for effective bottle depository system that is targeted and motivated for removing plastic waste from nature
- To suggest all main polluters to use less packaging and become responsible for polluted areas in nature
- To raise awareness of effective waste sorting, recycling and reusing.
